Jill Scott is the only child of her mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Being a single girl She was also raised by her maternal grandmother. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. While working two jobs part-time, she also studied secondary teaching at Temple University. Her goal was to be a teacher of English in a secondary school. This dream however, was in vain when she left college after three year of studies and was an aide to teachers. After starting her career doing live poetry shows She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their collaboration song, was composed by them. She came out during an Roots performance. The show led to collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. Also, she was performers on the Canada tour of the Broadway musical production Rent. She was signed to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
